Ishiro Honda
Born 5/7/1911`Died 2/28/1993

Born in Yamagata prefecture, Japan, graduated Nihon University College of Art (Nichidai) in 1933. Employed by PCL (later to become Toho) in 1932 as an assistant director.

Served in the army during the war, repatriated, and in 1951 directed his first theatrical directorial film titled gThe Blue Pearlh.  Became interested in special effects filming, and teamed up with SFX director Eiji Tsuburaya and directed numerous monster films starting with gGodzillah (f54), gThe Mysteriansh (f57), gMothrah (f61), gInvasion of Astro-Monsterh (f65), all of which made him the leading figure in the monster film boom, and which also gained him recognition overseas.

Having been best of friends with director Akira Kurosawa since their assistant director days, Honda acted as the assistant director for gStray Dogh, chief assistant director for gKagemushah, and continued to assist Kurosawa in gRanh, gDreamsh, "Rhapsody in August", and gMaadadayoh as gdirectorfs aideh.

Passed away at age 81.

1911 Born May 7th in Ohtsuna, Asahi-mura, Higashitagawa-gun, Yamagata prefecture, the youngest child of Father Houkan, who was the chief Buddhist priest at Chuurenji temple in Yudono-san, and Mother Miyo. He had 3 older brothers and 1 older sister, and having been born the fourth son in the year of the pig/boar, he was named Ishiro (the kanji characters of his name signify gboarh and gfourth sonh)  His family had been priests for generations and their lives were devoted half to agriculture and half to the priesthood.

When in 3rd grade, his Father became the chief priest for Iouji temple in Takaido, Tokyo and the entire family moved to the city, where he attended Takaido Elementary school.  Later, the family moved to Kanagawa prefecture where he entered Kougyokusha Middle School (now Kougyokusha Garden).  Throughout elementary and middle school, he enjoyed youth and science magazines.  He also encountered film for the first time at a touring elementary school film screening, making a great impact on young Ishiro.

From that point he viewed a variety of films, mainly gcliffhangersh which were popular at the time.  He was especially impressed by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnaufs gThe Last Laughh (1926) starring Emil Jannings and narrated by Musei Tokugawa.

Graduated Kougyokusha Middle School.
Admiring the world and possibility of film, which was called gthe eighth arth, he enrolled in the newly established Nihon University Art Departmentfs Film Department as part of the very first group of students.
1932
Age 21
P.C.L (Photo Chemical Laboratory), which is now Toho, opens and begins film production.
1933
Age 22
Invited by Iwao Mori, an executive of P.C.L. as well as a lecturer at Nihon University Film Department, he participated in a youth film gathering formed to train and cultivate new talent.  Along with Senkichi Taniguchi and Fumio Kamei, he became a disciple of Mori.

In August prior to graduating Nihon University, as part of a group invited by Mori, he was employed by P.C.L. Film Production Department.  Belonging to the Production Department Directing Section, he worked for the first time as an assistant director for Director Sotoji Kimura on gTadano Bonji Jinsei Benkyoh.

Passed the physical examination given at conscription as gA-gradeh.

During filming of gEnoken no Seishun Suikodenh, met Director Kajiro Yamamoto under whom he later studied.  He also acted as the third, then second assistant director for Director Shigeo Yagura on gKinu no Dorogutsuh and Director Mikio Naruse on gOtome Gokoro Sannin Shimaih.

January - Enlisted in the First Regiment Infantry - First Army Division First Regiment Fifth Company.
1936
Age 25
February – Encounterd the 2.26 (February 26) Incident, an attempted coup dfetat raised by young radical Army officers.

May – Dispatched to Manchuria.  This is the same time when Toho films, under P.C.L. was established.
1937
Age 26
March – Sent home on leave.  Returned to the film studio, and participated in the production of Kajiro Yamamotofs gOtto no Teisouh.  Met Akira Kurosawa, who was a fellow assistant director on the same film, who turned out to be a life-long friend.

Continued to work as a second assistant director on Yamamotofs gEnoken no chakkiri Kinta (Parts 1 & 2)h, as well as an aid on Director Sadao Yamanakafs gNinjo kamifuusenh.  Also worked on Kajiro Yamamotofs gUtsukushiki Takah and Mikio Narusefs gNadareh.
1938
Age 27
After working on Director Eisuke Takizawafs gChinetsuh (chief: Kurosawa, second: Honda), Director Mansaku Itamifs gKyojindenh, Kajiro Yamamotofs gTojuro no Koih and Mikio Narusefs gTsuruhachi Tsurujirouh, he was promoted to chief assistant director on Director Takeshi Satofs gChocolate to Heitaih.
1939

March – Married Kimi, who was a scriptor at the time.

Worked on Takeshi Satofs gSara Otomeh, Director Hideo Ogunifs gRoppa Uta no Miyako e Yukuh, Kajiro Yamamotofs gEnoken no Zangiri Kintah.  During the filming of Yamamotofs gUmah in December, he was called back to active duty in the Army.

Once again departed for the Chinese front, and viewed the completed gUmah while out on the front.

Returned to the film studio sets.  Acted as chief assistant director on Kajiro Yamamotofs gKato Hayabusa Sentou-taih.  The shooting continued through March of the following year.  This also was the year Toho Co., Ltd. was established.

March – Along with the completion of gKato Hayabusa Sentou-taih, once again he is called back to duty by the Army.

After working on Kajiro Yamamotofs gKaze no Koh (the first Eiga Geijutsu Kyoukai work), he directed the documentary gIse Shimah.  Then after working on Kajiro Yamamotofs gHaru no Tawamureh, acted as the aide to director on Akira Kurosawafs gStray Dogh.  On this film he also was in charge of location filming for the B-team, and directed the scene where you see Toshiro Mifune from behind as he walks through traffic.

2001 A transcription of a lecture Honda made at a screening held at Tokyo Genzousho (now Imagica) in 1987 featured in the commentary booklet of the CD box set gToho Tokusatsu Champion Matsurih (Vap).

gGojira wo Tsukutta Otokotachi – Honda Ishiro Monogatari (Men Who Made Godzilla – The Ishiro Honda Story)h (zen & go (part 1&2) by Kazuya Yasutaku published in gShuukan Shounen Magajinh vol. 52 which went on sale in November and in 2002 vol. 1 which went on sale on December 5th.

A transcription of a discussion group Honda participated in between Akira Kurosawa, Keinosuke Uegusa and Teruyo Nogami titled "Youshouki no Kioku "Gama no abura" no Tame no Koudankai (Memories of Childhood, Discussion Group for "Gama no abura")" published in KineJunMook "Kurosawa Akira: Tensai no kurou to souzou (Akira Kurosawa: The Hardships and Creations of a Genius)"  (publisher: Kinema Junposha).
2006 November - gEiga wo tazunete – Inoue Hisashi Taidanshuu (Visiting Film – Hisaishi Inouefs Conversations)h (publisher: Chikumashobo) published, which features a conversation with Honda held in 1992.
2007 February – official website gishirohonda.comh established.
2008November - English version of official website is established.

2010In October, the broadcast of gCentennial Anniversary Program:  This is Ishirō Honda Laboratory!h commences via 25 community FM stations around the nation.

On November 6th, a talk show / screening / exhibition titled gCentennial Anniversary Event: Ishirō Honda, 'Godzilla' and Life in Filmh was held at Kitakata-shi, Fukushima prefecture with their community FM station gKITAKATA CITY FMh.

On December 8th, the book gGojira to Waga Eiga Jinsei (Godzilla and My Life in Film)h is put back in print by Wani Books PLUS Shinso.

2011On January 16th, a centennial anniversary pre-event celebration is held at the gAsagaya Lofth in Tokyo.

Special centennial anniversary website ghondaishiro100.comh launches on January 17th.

March 5th - A three-part event composed of talk show, concert and screening titled "Idai na Eigajin no Sokuseki: Honda Ishiro Seitan 100nen - Gojira ni Kami wo Yadoshita Otoko -  (The Footprints of a Great Film Maker:  Ishirō Honda 100 Year Centennial - The Man Who Put Spirit into Godzilla -" was held at the 2011 Chōfu Film Festival (venue: Chōfushi Bunkakaikan Tazukuri).

June - A reprint of the book "Good Morning Godzilla - Director Ishiro Honda and an Era at the Film Studio" (author: Naofumi Higuchi) is made available again by Kokushokankokai.
